The [male][male] of Tchitrea mutata (L.) are tetramorphic, representing 4 distinct phases or mutations (a, maroon; b, maroon with white streamers; c, white-backed; d, black-backed). The species is divided into 3 sspp. T. m. mutata (L.), of eastern Madagascar, includes mutants a, b, and d; T. m. pretiosa Less., of Mayotte I., includes mutants a and c; T. m. singetra (p.124), of western Madagascar, includes mutants b and c. Various synonyms are listed.
