Revision of South American Gramineas of the genus Piptochaetium

Revision of South American Gramineas of the genus Piptochaetium

Procrev Mus La Plata (6): 213-310

An account of the disposition of Piptochaetium Presl, 1830, by various agrostologists is given. The hitherto confused synonymy is worked out after study of the types found in several of the principal herbaria of Europe, in the U. S. National Herbarium, and in herbaria of Argentina. The other collections of Piptochaetium in these herbaria and also from Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, and Bolivia were also studied. The relationship of the genus to other members of Stipeae is discussed, and a key differentiating them is provided. A study of leaf-anatomy as well as detailed study of inflorescence is made, and the 21 S. American spp. and 7 vars. are illustrated by enlarged drawings of spikelets and fruit and also by drawings of microscopic cross-sections of blades. Three spp. are illustrated by full page habit-drawings. The 26 spp. of Piptochaetium are wholly American, 21 of them being bunch-grasses of the pampas and open slopes of the southern half of S. America. A key to the S. American spp. is given, the spp. are described and specimens cited. The following new sections, new spp., and new combinations are proposed: Piptochaetium Sect. PODOPOGON, based on Podopogon Raf.; P. brachyspermum {Oryzopsis napo-staensis var. brachysperma Speg.); P. cabrerae (Buenos Aires, Argentina); P. confusum (Entre Rios, Argentina); P. bicolor var. minor (0. b. var. to, Speg.); P. indutum (Salta, Argentina); P. Sect. EUPIPTOCHAETIUM, P. stipoides, vars. chaetophorum (P. c. Griseb.), verruculosum {Stipa verruculosa Mez), echinulatum (Buenos Aires, Argentina), purpurascens (P. ovatum var. p. Hack), and parviflorum (Buenos Aires, Argentina); P. calvescens (Buenos Aires, Argentina); P. uruguayense var. microcarpum (Cor-rientes, Argentina); P. burkartianum (Corrientes, Argentina), and P. panicoides forma subpapillosum (P. leio-carpum f. subpapillosa Hack.). The following are based on N. American spp.: P. avenaceum {Stipa avenacea L.); P. pringlei {Oryzopsis p. Beal); and P. virescens {Stipa v. H. B. K.). The following transfers to other genera are also proposed: Oryzopsis mucronata {Piptochaetium mucro-natum Griseb.); Stipa laevis {Piptatherum laeve Nees); S. florulenta {Oryzopsis florulenta Pilg.). Stipa ovata Trin., the basis of Piptochaetium ovatum (Trin.) E. Desv., because Trinius apparently confused 2 spp. under this name, is rejected as a species dubia. The common form named P. ovatum in the U. S. National Herbarium is P. stipoides var. purpurascens (Hack.) Parodi. A bibliography and index are given. Except the description of new spp. and vars., which are in Latin, the work is in Spanish.
