Roentgen findings in obstructed diaphragmatic hernia

Roentgen findings in obstructed diaphragmatic hernia

Radiology 79: 648-657

Obstruction as a complication of diaphragmatic hernia is not rare. Failure to recognize this complication often has fatal consequences. Difficulties in the recognition of obstructed hernia are emphasized in the literature. Actually, with the utilization of simple basic roentgen principles, the diagnosis can readily be made from plain roentgenograms or barium studies. Obstructed hiatal hernia is generally associated with volvulus of the stomach. The torsion results in an interesting alteration of the pre-existing relationship between the diaphragm and the stomach, so that the distal stomach replaces the fundus in the hernial sac. Obstructed traumatic hernia manifests itself on barium examination as a funnel-shaped constriction of the gut as it traverses the tear in the diaphragm.
