Root growth of seedlings of Pinus echinata and Pinus taeda

Root growth of seedlings of Pinus echinata and Pinus taeda

Jour Agric Res 53(2): 145-149

Root growth of seedlings of shortleaf and loblolly pine was observed for 2 yrs. at Fayetteville, Arkansas, by means of sunken, glass-sided frames. Recordable growth occurred during every 8-day period in this time. Greatest activity was in early spring and late summer-early autumn, coincident with considerable rainfall and favorable but not excessively high temp. Activity was low in midsummer, coincident with little or no rainfall and high temp., and winter. There was less variation in the rate of growth of roots below 8 inches than above this level.
