Rust resistance in Antirrhinum

Linaria cana-densis, L. cymbalaria, L. dalmatia, L. pallida, L. purpurea, L. vulgaris, Adenostegia pilosa, Antirrhinum asarina, A. ibanjezii, A. maurandiodes and A. virga were highly resistant or immune when inoculated with Puccinia antirrhini from snapdragon, Antirrhinum majus. A. orontium was moderately resistant. A. glutinosum, A. hispanicum, A. molle, A. nuttallianum, A. sempervirens, A. siculum and A. tortuosum showed marked differences between or within strains of the spp. A. latifolium and A. valentinum were for the most part susceptible, a few individuals showing resistance. A. barrelieri, A. coulte-rianum, A. glandulosum and A. vexillo-calculatum were uniformly susceptible. In A. majus, 47 commercial vars. were studied. For the most part, these were very susceptible. A few selections were obtained showing slight resistance. Highly resistant strains were obtained from some of these by self-pollination and selection. Highly resistant types were also obtained from crosses of snap-dragon with resistant selections of A. glutinosum and A. ibanjezii. When several of the resistant strains were crossed with susceptible strains of snapdragon, resistance was found to be inherited as a simple dominant factor. Emsweller and Jones, and White, have used certain of the resistant selections in crosses combining resistance with desirable commercial qualities.
