Seasonal abundance and relative numbers of the tobacco hornworm, Protoparce sexta, and the tomato hornworm, Protoparce quinquemaculata, in Kentucky

Seasonal abundance and relative numbers of the tobacco hornworm, Protoparce sexta, and the tomato hornworm, Protoparce quinquemaculata, in Kentucky

Ann Entomol Society America 58(1): 71-73

Black-light trap catches of tobacco hornworm, Protoparce sexta (Johannson), moths and tomato hornworm, P. quinquemaculata (Haworth), moths in Kentucky from 1959 through 1963 were very low in June and early July. A small peak of moth catches in late July to early August was followed by a large abrupt peak 3-4 weeks later. Larvae resulting from the eggs laid by the moths representing this late large peak would not have time to develop fully before most of the tobacco in Kentucky was cut. Of the moths caught 78% were males, and 75% of the moths were tobacco hornworms. Tomato hornworm larvae found on tobacco in the field were less abundant than the relative number of tomato hornworm moths caught in the traps would indicate.
