Selection of Coxsackie B5 virus variants through passages in HeLa cell cultures

In a wild strain of Coxsackie B5 virus, a small quantity of non hemagglutinating particles exists besides a great majority of hemagglutinating particles. Serial passage of this viral strain in HeLa cell cultures favors the selection of non hemagglutinating particles which prevail after a few passages. The inhibition of the hemagglutinating and infecting properties of the Coxsackie B5 viral particles, which are genetically hemagglutinin containing, can be ascribed to the presence in the culture fluid of HeLa cells of an inhibiting factor, probably indentical with the so-called anti-hemagglutinin factor (FAEA).
