Selection of chlortetra-cycline-producing strains by using ethylenimine and the preservation of active strains

Comparative studies of the antibiotic activity of natural and induced variants of the chlortetracycline producer Actinomyces aureofaciens 2201 showed that the variation of the natural variants is broader than the variation of the variants treated with ethylenimine. The variants isolated by dissemination of natural strain 2201, an infusion, quickly lose their activity in resowing and preservation. When strain 2201 was treated with ethylenimine, stable variants were obtained which exceeded the initial culture in activity by 30 to 50%. Strain 2201 can be preserved in spore form in millet for no more than 7 to 8 months. When the spores are preserved in sand the activity of the strain will decrease in 5 months. The capability of strain 2201 to biosynthesize vitamin Bj2 is retained considerably longer than its capability to synthesize chlortetracycline.
