Some immune reactions of murine-leukemia viruses demonstrable within a completely isologous system



Virus inducing cancer: Implications for therapy, 25-50



The data presented resulted from an attempt to demonstrate that a murine-leukemia virus, studied within the framework of the most susceptible host and the host in which the virus was discovered, can be manipulated to the extent that the natural host can be rendered solidly immune and that the antiserum obtained from these immunizing procedures can be used in tests such as virus neutralization, complement fixation, agglutination observed by electron microscopy, and demonstration of cytotoxicity. More important from the standpoint of human disease, these data show that antiserum obtained within the isologous system can be used in passive immunization and possibly in therapy of the specific disease when it is already established in the susceptible host. The work presents at least 2 aspects worthy of further exploration: that concerned with the applicability of the findings to prevention and therapy of human leukemia; that concerned with the basic biology of murine leukemias, including a thorough investigation of the antigenic relationships among various strains of leukemia viruses using all known techniques.
