Some problems in the biology and biochemistry of Origanum vulgare and Hyssopus officinalis L

Bot Zhur 44(8): 1124-1128

A study of the biology and the changes in the content of essential oil of Origanum and Hyssopus, grown in the neighborhood of Leningrad, showed that they develop well under conditions of cultivation. The yield of essential oil was determined in 6 year old Origanum and in 2 year old Hyssopus. The maximum yield of essential oil was 0.64% and 0.88% from the racemes of Origanum and Hyssopus, respectively, and 0.27%-0.32% and 0.47%, respectively, from the whole plants. The yield of leaves and stems was 32 cntr/ha for Origanum and 30.2 cntr/ha for Hyssopus. The most favorable time for collecting the plants is the end of July.
