Experimental investigations of the metachromatic properties of cresyl violet are described. The absorbing capacity of cresyl violet solutions is influenced by the concentration of dyestuff and alcohol. In the pH area of 1[long dash]9 the absorption curves are independent of hydrogen ion activity with constant dyestuff or alcohol content. Admixture of both sulphate-and phosphate-bearing colloids produces metachromatic effects. The tint of solutions containing nucleic acid is determined by the proportion of nucleic acid to dyestuff and by the pH value. Further investigations are needed.
