Sperm distribution in the spermathecae of multiple mated queen honey bees

Data on worker-progeny classification from 35 multiple-mated queen honey bees, Apis mellifera were collected to determine whether a random sample of progeny can be used to form an unbiased estimate of the relative frequency, or distribution, of various sperm types within the spermathecae. It was found that sperm from multiple matings does not mix appreciably inside the spermatheca, during or after mating, nor can it be mixed by methods used before insemination. Many random samples drawn from 35 queens multiple-mated naturally or artificially showed that a bias exists in such samples.
