Abstract
Chicks were successfully used in a growth expt. to determine vit. A potency of provit. A. In the chick, pro-gamma-carotene was found to have a provit. A potency of 51% while all-trans-gamma-carotene (prepared by stereoisomerization of pro-gamma-carotene) had a potency of 42% of that of all-trans-beta-carotene. The results obtained with the chick are in close agreement with those obtained in rat growth studies where the potency of this poly-cis carotenoid was shown to be as great or greater than that of the corresponding poly-trans compound.
