Stinkhorns from the Dutch East Indies

Stinkhorns from the Dutch East Indies

De Tropische Naluur No 12: 201-209

An account is given of some of the Phallineae of the Dutch East Indies. New for this region are Protubera maracuja from Sumatra, Myco-phanis gardneri from Java, and Echinophallus lauter-bachii from New Guinea and Halmahera. Aseroe arach-noidea, hitherto known only from Cochin China and Java, has been found in Sumatra and Borneo. A photograph of a fairy ring of this species is given. The very rare Ithyphallus costatus, which was found only once (in 1899) on Mt. Gedeh, was rediscovered at about the same spot. Dictyophora multicolor is described and a colored plate given of it. Its eggs, especially when young, are covered by short soft spines, a characteristic hitherto known only for the eggs of Echinophallus.
