Studies in coronary circulation. IV. A. The duration of the coronary dilator action of theophylline ethylenediamine. B. The effect of insulin-free pancreatic extract on the coronary circulation

The effect of theophylline ethylenediamine (T.E.) and insulin-free pancreatic extract (P.E.) on the coronary circulation of dogs was determined using the heart-lung preparation and the intact animal. T.E. produced a marked dilation of the coronary vessels in the heart-lung preparation and in the intact animal for 21.6 min. (ave.). The P.E. produced a less increase in the coronary flow which lasted only 1-2 min. and in some cases was followed by a decreased flow. In some intact animals the coronary flow was decreased. It is concluded that the P.E. is a general vaso-dilator and has no specific effect on the coronary vessels while the T.E. is a marked coronary dilator in addition to its general dilator action.
