Studies In Methionine And Sulfur Metabolism. I. The Fate Of Intravenously Administered Methionine, In Normal Individuals And In Patients With Liver Damage

Journal of Clinical Investigation 27(5): 677-688

When 50 ml. of a 3 per cent, solution of DLmethionine were intravenously injected into normal human subjects, the average rate of disappearance of L-methionine from the plasma was 0-45 +or- 0.03 mg. per cent, per hr. The peak value occurred 15 min. after injection. In subjects with liver damage the rate was significantly lower. Under all the conditions studied the urinary excretion of L-methionine in the first 3 hr. after injection was negligible; that of D-methionine was considerable and roughly proportional to the amount administered.
