MER-29 (l-diethylaminoethoxy)-phenyl)-l-(p-tolyl)-2-(p-chlorophenyl) ethanol), (triparanol) fed to rats in a dosage of 0.5 nag/day or higher markedly reduced levels of serum cholesterol, but with some inhibition of growth rate. The livers of drug-treated animals contained large amounts of a sterol other than cholesterol. This was separated from cholesterol by means of silicic acid chromatography of the p-phenylazobenzoyl derivatives and identified as desmosterol (24-dehydrocholesterol).
