Studies on mitochondria: VII. The relationship between the morphological control and the dinitrophenol stimulation of adenosinetriphosphatase in liver mitochondria

The ATPase activity of isolated mitochondria is conditioned by the osmolarity of the suspending medium. Effectiveness of stress and transforming agents in eliciting adequate ATPase stimulation depends upon their ability to induce morphological alterations. This interdependence of enzymatic reactivity and mitochondrial metamorphosis is a fundamental mitochondrial phenomenon. It is established that the morphological transformation precedes the enzymatic changes and that dinitrophenol evokes its effect by a primary action on mitochondrial structure.
