Animal experiments using rats were conducted in an attempt to study the influence of 19-Nor-androstenolone (19 NAPP) an anabolic steroid, on the adrenal gland. The relationship, if any, between predonisolone sodium hemisuccinate (predonin), an adrenal cortex hormone, and stress was investigated. While 19 NAPP produces a slight shrinking of the adrenal cortex in normal rats, this change returns to normal after 10 days. Predonin produces atrophy of the adrenal cortex especially in the zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata; when 19 NAPP is used jointedly a remarkable diminishing of the symptoms occurs. When whole body X-irradiation is administered as a stressor, an atrophy in the zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata and localized lesions is seen in the adrenal cortex, which is prevented by a pre-treatment by predonin. Atrophy which may be attributed to predonin itself is seen. This can be prevented by joint treatment with 19 NAPP.
