Studies on taitomycin, a new antibiotic produced by Streptomyces, sp no. 772 . II. Physicochemical and biological properties of taitomycin

Studies on taitomycin, a new antibiotic produced by Streptomyces, sp no. 772 . II. Physicochemical and biological properties of taitomycin

Jour Antibiotics [tokyo] 12(1): 7-11

Partially purified taitomycin was soluble in pyridine, glacial acetic acid, methanol, ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate; it was insoluble in ligroin, petroleum ether and acidic water. It gave positive Fehling and Elson-Morgan reactions and showed UV absorption maxima at 330 and 420 mu. On paper chromatograms it resembled actinomycin. The material inhibited gram-positive bacteria and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, but showed no anti-tumor activity. Taitomycin was not toxic to mice and prolonged the survival time of mice infected with Diplococcus pneumoniae.
