Moving soil toward rice hills in cultivation (a practice called Baido) increased growth of stems and increased size and number of grains. Absorption of minerals was increased, notably of K2O. During high temperature of July, however, rapid oxidation of organic matter caused sufficient reduction in intake of soil minerals in the soil to retard growth.
