Studies on the Cytospora sheath disease of sugar cane. 6. A method of varietal resistance trials of sugar cane to Cytospora sheath disease.

Studies on the Cytospora sheath disease of sugar cane. 6. A method of varietal resistance trials of sugar cane to Cytospora sheath disease.

Rept Taiwan Sugar Expt Sta 1: 21-28

There should be 25-30 plants of each var. under test and they should be inoculated 2-3 months after planting. It is therefore desirable to plant the cane in Feb. or Mar. in order to obtain vigorous growth and to meet the requirement of temp. at which inoculation is made. Inoculation is made on the needle-pricked surface of leaf sheaths with a small piece of mycelium from a 3-day culture on sugar cane agar kept at 28[degree]C, and the investigation lasts about 35-40 days after inoculation. It is advisable to use F108 as a control var., as any vars. that give a higher infection than this are of little practical value. The author considers this method very useful for the detn. of var. resistance, but it should be supplemented by field observations.
