Studies on the Hachiro-gata bottom soil I. On the some chemical and physical properties

Studies on the Hachiro-gata bottom soil I. On the some chemical and physical properties

Bull Tohoku Natl Agric Expt Sta 15: 21-32

Hachiro-gata is a half-salt lake and there are variations in salinity as well as in type of lake bottom soil depending on location. Taking this fact into consideration, 123 soil samples were taken from different places in the lake (one plot/4 km2), and on these samples some chemical and physical tests were made. The salt content of the lake water is higher in the southern part than in the northern part, and the vertical change of its concentration is lower in surface water than bottom water. This difference influences the Mg, Ca, Cl, FeS2, FeS, and HCO3 content of the bottom soils. These components are also higher in the southern part than the northern. The total N% (about 0.3% of dry matter) is rather higher than other polder soil (Kojima-bay) or sea bottom soil (Yatsushiro-bay), but this N is easily decomposable. Base exchange capacity is also higher than that of other polder and sea bottom soils.
