Studies on the Syllidae, I

Studies on the Syllidae, I

Quart Jour Microsc Sci 72(2): 219-245

At Plymouth this annelid feeds on Obelia, the tentacles of which are cut off by means of the toothed crown of the chitinous trepan at the front of the pharynx. A water current set up by the proventriculus draws the particles of food into the intestine. Later as the feeding subsides, the food is passed back through the intestine by peristalsis. The action of the proventriculus resembles a suction pump and is carried on by strong radial muscular columns, stretching from the center to the periphery of the organ, which by their contraction open the lumen and effect a suction. The author describes in detail the histology of the muscular mechanisms involved.
