Studies on the cause of death in tetanus. IV. Experimental tetanus in white mice: Clinical features, oxygen consumption, liver glycogen and resistance to asphyxia

The clinical features following the infection of various amounts of tetanus toxin were studied. Small doses of toxin will result in muscular hypertonia while massive doses result in complete paralysis, after a period of incubation and survival time very much shortened. Animals injected with 1.5 and 4.0 MLD (guinea pig units) return to their normal weight after a period of fasting, even after the period of incubation. We have also found that liver glycogen in the group injected with 4.0 MLD returns to normal after feeding is resumed. Despite a marked fall in liver glycogen the oxygen consumption after 40,000 and 100 MLD decreases. Survival time at low oxygen tensions is markedly decreased in the animals with tetanus, even when these are tested at a time when clinical signs are not yet evident.
