Studies on the cause of death in tetanus. V. In vitro studies on aerobic and anaerobic respiration in tissues of mice inoculated with tetanus toxin

The in vitro respiration of tissues of mice injected with tetanus toxin was studied. Anaerobic respiration of the diaphragm of injected animals is significantly lower than in the normal animal. As to the aerobic respiration, it was found that the oxygen consumption of injected animals is much higher than in the normal diaphragm, and just about as high as the respiration of diaphragms from normal animals starved for 48 hours. No differences were found between normal and injected animals in aerobic or anaerobic respiration of brain homogenizates. Therefore there is presumptive evidence of a block in the metabolic pathway of carbohydrates, at least in the diaphragm of injected animals. These data are compared with the result of in vivo investigation carried out previously in mice and in the human, and the conclusion is reached that a biochemical lesion seems to be active in both the alive animal and in the humans. There is evidence that these findings are not specific to tetanus.
