Studies on the composition of pericardial fluid

Studies on the composition of pericardial fluid

Arch Exptl Path U Pharmakol 217(1): 1-9

Analyses were made of pericardial fluids of rabbits, guinea plgs and cows. Fluid vols. were 0.3-1.0 cc, 0.05-0.2 cc. and 50-100 cc, respectively. The pH was found to be 7.5-7.7 and the sp. gr. was 1.001-1.007. 2% albumin was found. Ca, P, and glucose concns. were similar to those of serum, although glucose concns. tended to be lower. Glucose concn. could be altered with insulin, alloxan or eplnephrine injns. It was postulated that pericardial sugar could be metabolized by the myocardium.
