Studies on the fine structure of the infectious particles of Newcastle disease and the asiociated non-infectious virus-specific particles: A contribution to the classification of myxo viruses

Chemical studies suggest that serologically related strains of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) differ in their surface structure. Shaking with ether or tween and ether separates the viria of NDV into at least two non-infectious sub-units which can be designated as haemagglutinin and RNP-antigen. Both components were isolated and characterized in detail. Apart from the virion itself, multiplication of NDV produced at least three types of non-infectious particles, namely a soluble antigen and cell-bound (ZGHA) and free (FHA) heamagglutinating particles. The soluble antigen is a ribonucleoprotein and represents the RNP antigen of the virion, The ZGHA represents portions of the ergastoplasm of the host cell laden with virus haemagglutinin. In analogy with similar bodies in influenza, the title viromicrosome is suggested. The FHA are abnormal virus particles which contain no RNA in their components (RNP-antigen). In their structure and biological properties they resemble closely the incomplete virus particles of influenza and so can be designated as incomplete forms. These studies suggest that the myxo group contains at least two subgroups- influenza and multiform viruses. Relationships between the fine structure and the biological properties of NDV and other human and animal pathogenic viruses are discussed in relation to their systematic classification.
