In studies concerned with the inheritance of resistance to certain local oat stem rust races, the varieties Burke and Laggan were found to possess an identical gene designated Rd1, which was that in Richland. The varieties White Tartar and Anthony each possessed a second gene (Rd1 1). Within the limits of the size of the populations possible in practice in segregating generations of higher plants the 2 genes were allelic.
