Fresh embryonic extract added to the culture medium accelerates the formation of collagenous fibers in the dermis and the mitotic activity in the epidermis as well. Both of these activities are inhibited by cortisone acetate at concentrations above 0.025 gamma/ml. The antagonism between their effects is easily observed, when jointly applied. Hydroxyproline at concentrations of 0.25-2.5 mg/ml activates the mitotic activity in the epidermis, though the effect is readily antagonized by cortisone acetate. It was not determined whether this substance accelerates collagenous fiber formation in the dermis.
