Studies on the nutrition of Candida. I. Nutritional requirements of Candida

Studies on the nutrition of Candida. I. Nutritional requirements of Candida

Japanese Jour Bact 11(10): 907-910

The nutritional requirement of 11 species (66 strains) of Candida was investigated using the glucose-Simmons medium as the basal medium. As the essential growth factor C. albicans, C. guilliermondii, C. pul-cherrima, C. variabilis and C. paraspilosis (nov. spec. 74) require biotin, C. rugosa biotin and thiamine, C. pseudotropicalis biotin, pantothenate and niacine, and C. parakrusei biotin, thiamine, pyridoxine and niacine. As the growth stimulating factor, thiamine acts for C. albicans, pyridoxine for C. tropicalis and C. guilliermondii, and pantothenate for C. tropicalis. No growth factors were found with C. krusei, C. parapsilosis (nov. spec. 65) and C. utilis. Biotin could be substituted by pimelic acid only with C. parakrusei.
