Studies on the relationship between adrenal gland and alkaline phosphatase activities in serum and various organs of pregnant rats and alkaline phosphatases in liver and bone of fetus

Adrenalectomy of female rats, pregnant and non-pregnant, was attempted, and it was found that our results accorded with the results of many other investigators who attempted adrenalectomy of animals. One group of adrenalectomized non-pregnant rats, and another group of adrenalectomized rats in latter period of pregnancy were taken up. The alkaline phosphatase activity in serum and various organs of mother as well as the activity of alkaline phosphatase in placenta, liver and tibia of fetus were observed biochemically, and after the subcutaneous injection of cortisone, they were compared with the control group and the control pregnant group in order to observe them all, while the change in the weight of fetus and placenta by adrenalectomy was investigated. The following results were obtained: a) In pregnant and non-pregnant rats body weight loss was observed after adrenalectomy, but the decrease in pregnancy was lower than in non-pregnant rats. Fetal and placental weight was decreased. In pregnancy, alkaline phosphatase activity was enhanced in serum and kidney, while it was lowered in liver. No remarkable variation in the alkaline phosphatase activity was confirmed in hypophysis, thyroid gland, ovarium and uterus, while the increasing tendency of the alkaline phosphatase was observed in small intestine. In non-pregnant rats alkaline phosphatase activity in serum was lowered by adrenalectomy. The lowering of the activity of alkaline phosphatase was also observed in hypophysis, ovary, liver, kidney and small intestine, but the subcutaneous injection of cortisone checked the lowering of the alkaline phosphatase activity. No remarkable variation of the alkaline phosphatase activity was observed in thyroid gland and uterus. In pregnant group the same kind of change as in non-pregnant group was observed in almost all organs, but in hypophysis no change was observed, while the enhancing tendency was observed in ovary. The alkaline phosphatase activity in placenta and tibia of fetus was lowered by adrenalectomy, but by the subcutaneous injection of cortisone it was checked. Alkaline phosphatase in the liverof fetus was not changed.
