Studies on the walnut husk borer injurious to Persian walnut in Japan. I. A survey on the damage caused by the borer in the main district of production of Persian walnut in Japan

New Entomol 13(6): 1-8

A Walnut husk borer, belonging to the family Heliodinidae causes severe damage to Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) in Japan. Its scientific name is unknown. In the present paper the distribution of this pest in the main district of walnut production is described along with the characteristic damage. The larva bores into the husk of Persian walnut and grows in it until the prepupa. Up to the present the insect has not damaged Japanese walnuts such as Juglans sieboldiana Maxim. and J. cordiformis Maxim. Damaged nuts are difficult to identify when small, but infestation is easy to detect in larger nuts. The insects are found from the middle 10 days of June to the last 10 days of Sept. (harvest time), and the damage is severest both in early July and in late Aug. In July almost all damaged nuts fall while in late Aug. a considerable number of the damaged nuts remain on the tree. The pest is distributed over the whole district of walnut production, though they are severer in places with a high density of walnut tree cannot be found in places with a low density. The damage is greater in the selected strain than in older strains. The damage seems to be different according to the culturing type of the tree and to the environmental condition.
