Study of muscular work and of fatigue III. The venous blood coming from a muscle doing dynamic work in man

The venous blood outflow from the forearm muscles was taken before, during and after dynamic locally limited work was performed by these muscles. Blood gases content and lactic acid content were correlated with the power of work. The oxygen content remains at a constant desaturation level (average 7.5%). The CO2 content depends on metabolic and nonmetabolic variations. Blood lactate increases during local muscular work, even if the intensity of the latter is moderate. These results suggest that muscular exhaustion during dynamic local work does not depend on blood oxygen insufficiency but on the mechanism of oxygen diffusion out of the capillary walls. Furthermore, the level of oxygen content in the venous blood of muscle is a possible factor of the local blood flow regulation during muscular contraction.
