Study of the manner of life and control of Otiorrhynchus lavandus Germ

Study of the manner of life and control of Otiorrhynchus lavandus Germ

Zastita Bilja [Plant Protect] 15(81): 465-564

In a several-year study of this insect, the distribution area, development cycle, morphological characteristics of each development stage, ecology, parasites and control measures were investigated. This insect is found throughout the European part of the Palaearctic zone. The average length of the male is 9.62 and of the female 9.92 mm. The insect has a single generation each year. The imagos winter in the soil 2-6 cm deep under vinestocks or bushes of neighboring coppices, and appear before budding begins. By gnawing the buds they cause enormous damage to vineyards in years when the weevils are abundant. The larvae live in the soil at a depth of 30-40 cm and feed on the roots of the vine, passing through 8 instars. The natural habitats of the insect in Yugoslavia are the border zones of forests and bushwood; it subsists and goes from there to the vineyards. Climatic factors play an important role in its periodic mass appearance. The entomophagous fungi Beauveria bas-siana Bals. and Metarrhisium anispoliae Metsch. to some extent reduce its population. Talpa europea, Erinaceus europeaus and Phasianus colchicus are its natural predators. Chemicals such as HEOD Lindane and Carbaril, applied as dusts, give the best results.
