Study on the phosphate metabolism in congenital athyroidism

Study on the phosphate metabolism in congenital athyroidism

Zeitschr Kinder Heilk 62: 52-64

Lack of thyroid in the organism is followed by a decrease in inorg. phosphates and an unfavorable Ca:P balance. On adm. of thyroid in juvenile myxedema the low phosphate content becomes normal or increased and on the discontinuation of thyroid, this effect lasts for some time. Thyroid causes a retention of P and Ca, but does not influence the N metabolism. In balance studies on 10 thyroidectomized dogs the deficiency in thyroid was carefully compensated and evenly adjusted. On the adm. of thyroid the Ca and P balance is restored after a period of latency and the excretion of both Ca and P in the urine is decreased. With the subsidence of thyroid application, more Ca and P is excreted with the feces.
