Study On Two Lines Of Measles Virus Different In Cytopathic Effect And Interferon Production

Two virus lines were derived from the Edmonston strain giving a cytopathic effect in the form of multinucleated syncytia. These lines were obtained by passaging the virus on FL tissue. The first line (10[degree] Edm/FL 43) was a result of numerous passages of the undiluted virus on FL tissue. The cytopathic effect of this line was "strand forming". The second line (10-3 Edm/FL 38) obtained in passages with an inoculum diluted 10-3 induced formation of multinucleated syncytia in the tissue culture. The change, however, of the tissue (HeLa, dog kidney) and the exclusion of glutamine in the medium had no influence on the type of the cytopathic effect (in both cases). Both the virus lines were maintained in the passages when applying the proper concentration of the infective doses: 10[degree] and 10-3. These 2 virus lines differed significantly in the quantity of interferon produced. The line 10[degree] Edm/FL 43 obtained in passages of an undiluted virus, which causes cytopathic effect of the "strand forming" type, produced a larger quantity of interferon.
