Sturgeons of the northwestern Black Sea

Sturgeons of the northwestern Black Sea

Tr Vses Nauch Issled Inst Morsk Rybn Khoz Okeanogr 52: 287-347

The Black Sea and its tributaries are inhabited by 2 species of sturgeons: Acipenser sturio and A. guldenstadti colchinus. The former is not abundant; the latter is the object of commercial fishery, particularly in the north-western part of the Black Sea. In the USSR part of the Black Sea this sturgeon forms a Caucasian, a Dnepr and a Danube population. Information on size and weight composition of each population is presented, along with data on 6 ratios and age composition of fish in the catches from various regions. Data are also presented on the nutrition of young and adults as well as on maturation, fecundity, migrations, spawning and development of eggs and larvae. Substantial differences have been noted between sturgeons of the Dnepr and Danube populations.
