Abstract
The complete bonding of sulhydryl groups by N-ethylmaleinimide and cystamine does not affect hexokinase activity. Hence, SH-groups of the enzyme do not take part in the catalysis of the hexokinase reaction. Decrease of activity of the preparation of specific liver glucokinase due to N-ethylmaleinimide and cystamine and the complete prevention of inhibition by cysteine shows that the presence of free sulfhydryl groups is necessary for the display of glucokinase activity.
