p-Chloromercuribenzoate and silver titra-tions have been perfomred on identical mono-and dimercaptans and yeast alcohol dehydrogenase under standard conditions to permit comparison of the methods. Agreement between the 2 methods was obtained only with glutathione and 2-mercaptoethanol. Temperature is a significant variable. The implications of the findings for the interpreta tion of data obtained on -SH-containing proteins are discussed, using yeast alcohol dehydrogenase as an example.
