In cats or rabbits the subcutaneous injection of 0.2-0.3 mgm. curare per kgm. relaxes the spasm of the muscles in tetanus poisoning. The effect is most pronounced in the early stages, and cannot be produced after about the 7th day of the intoxication. The spasticity of tetanus and decerebrate rigidity are considered exaggerated conditions of postural tonus on which curare acts by blocking at least a part of the reflex pathways.
