Survival of Salmonella typhimurium in the soil

Monthly Bull Med Res Counc [gt Brit] 19(3): 39-41

A small urban garden exposed to ordinary weather conditions was found contaminated with Salmonella typhimurium, phage type /a. Thirty-two out of 80 samples of soil examined over a 10 month period were positive and the last isolate was taken 251 days after the beginning of the experiment. As the soil was considered to have been contaminated some time before this, it is probable that the survival time was not less than 280 days.
