Tachyphy-lactic reactions in cats, rats, and guinea pigs to certain anorexigens from the phenmetrazine and ephedrine series

Ephedrine, methylephedrine, phenmetrazine, phendimetrazine with its optical isomers, and phentrimetrazine were investigated with respect to their tachyphylactic reaction (T-reaction) on cat- and rat blood pressures, isolated guinea-pig atrium, and the caudal rat blood flow. Reaction strengths vary between substances and between species. Ephedrine causes a T-reaction in cats, guinea pigs, and rats in that order. Some evidence also exists for cross-T reactions between ephedrine and some phendimetrazine isomers, but the reactions were weak. Cats are sensitive (positive T-reaction) to ephedrine, phendimetrazine, and trimetrazine. Rats were sensitive to ephedrine only, and the guinea pig atrium to both ephedrine and phenmetrazine.
