The ant fauna in the west of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

The ant fauna in the west of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

Acta Zool Lilloana 17: 321-401

Climatic and ecological conditions are discussed. The population density is much reduced, most of the ant colonies being small. Most of the ants of western Patagonia represent relatively primitive elements within their respective groups. They apparently have no economic importance. They do no harm to agriculture, and there are none known which invade houses. A key is given, followed by descriptions of 10 genera and 22 spp., with much discussion of ecology and zoogeography. Specific endemism amounts to 70%. Of the 10 genera 2 are cosmopolitan, 3 are American, 2 exclusively South American, and 2 are endemic in the Antarctic region. Finally, Notomyrmex has a discontinuous distribution, being represented by different spp. in South America, New Zealand, and Australia.
