The biochemorphology of nicotine. I. Observations on the effect of progressive degradation of the pyrrolidine ring

Progressive degradation of the pyrrolidine ring of the nicotine molecule decreased acute toxicity to mice by (a) N-demethyl-ation, (b) opening of the pyrrolidine ring between the N-C linkage, (c) the shortening of the resultant chain following N-C cleavage between 1 and 5 positions, while pressor potency in the dog was decreased by (a) N-demethylation, (b) opening of the pyrrolidine ring between the N-C linkage, and by (c) deamination.
