In the opinion of the authors the bitter principle of Artemisia absinthium described in the literature is a mixture of 4 components, which have been isolated, named and investigated. The bitter taste of the four compounds is very different. With artamarine the bitter taste is perceptible in a dilution 1:850, with artamarinine 1:4450, with artamaridine 1:6800 and with artamaridinine 1:125,000. The content of total bitter principle of Artemisia absinthium fluctuates between 0.1 and 0.4%. Methods for approximative estimation of total and individual bitter principles are described.
