The delay and blockade of sensory impulses in the dorsal root ganglion

Sensory impulses are delayed in their passage through the dorsal root ganglion. Delay occurs whether the impulse is conducted centrifugally or centripetally. The slower the impulse, the longer the delay. The refractory curve recorded with the ganglion lying between the stimulating and recording electrodes changes in shape, owing to blockade of early refractory impulses in the ganglion. Site of delay and blockade is at the bifurcation point of the sensory fibers in the dorsal root ganglion. Cause of delay and blockade is simultaneous excitation of 2 fiber-branches by 1 single impulse in the pre-bifurcation segment.
