The dynamics of the saturation of the arterial blood with oxygen in schizophrenic patients under the action of chlorpromazine treatment Modern methods of research in neuropathology and psychiatry

Moscow : 213-215

Determinations were made with an oxyhemometer of the saturation of the arterial blood with O2 in 78 patients with schizophrenia, aged 18-37, who had had the disease for 2 weeks to 3 years and who were given orally or intramuscularly 50-140 mg of chlorpromazine per day for 2.5-5 months. Blood oxygen saturation before treatment was 92-93%. When chlorpromazine was administered, the saturation fell in proportion to the chlorpromazine dosage; with the elevated doses of 900-1400 mg per day no further reduction in saturation was observed. After treatment and the disappearance of the psychopathological symptoms, the saturation rose to 94.5-95%, that is, it changed in parallel with the clinical dynamics of the disease.
