Abstract
In dogs with a fistula of the stomach, a fistula of the intestine, and in 2 normal dogs, the mechanical receptors of the stomach, the small intestine, and of the rectum, were irritated by the introduction and inflation of a balloon (up to 800 ml of air, with pressure to 30 mm of mercury, for 1-2 hrs.). From the blood of a vein in the ear, investigation was made of the number of leukocytes (NL) and their phagocytic activity (PA). An irritation of the stomach when the NL was low caused an increase of NL, and when the initial NL was high, then the NL and PA decreased. An irritation of the mechanical receptors of the small and large intestines did not produce any changes of NL or PA.
