The effect of certain growth regulating substances on fruit set and fruit size in Royal Ann Sweet Cherries

Spray applications of N-metatolylphthalmic acid, parachlorophenoxyacetic acid, naphthalenacetic acid and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid in certain combinations significantly increased both fruit size and fruit set. Fruit weight increase ranged between 0 and 34% over the control with no harmful effects when applied at low concentrations. Of the five compounds tested, 2,4,5-T at 20 ppm and a combination spray of beta-naphthoxyacetic acid and parachlorophenoxyacetic acid at 50 ppm of each chemical appeared most promising. Concentrations of over 50 ppm caused epinasty and leaf flagging. The increases in fruit weight resulting from these treatments is due to an increase in size or volume of the pericarp.
